General Sample Mounting Procedures
To index the stage to the load/unload position for mounting or removing samples, see Load/Unload Sample.
Many AFM applications benefit from the use of mica as a substrate. Prior to incubating or plating samples on mica, follow the Mica Substrate Preparation procedure.
There are two methods for mounting samples on the Dimension Icon XY stage. The choice is determined predominantly by sample size:
- Small Sample Preparation—The most common method of sample preparation for study with an AFM involves attaching the sample substrate with double-sided adhesive patches or glue to a magnetic steel disc, which in turn mounts to the provided magnetic sample holder. Both steel disks and adhesive patches are available from Bruker AFM Probes.
- Large Sample Preparation—Large samples such as semiconductor wafers may be secured to the stage via the stage vacuum system.
CAUTION: Use of the magnetic small sample holder is not optimal for imaging soft magnetic materials due its the magnetic hold-down properties. If magnetic imaging is intended, mount the sample disc to the XY stage using the vacuum chuck.
